Best forQuality-driven buyers, premium positioningVolume buyers, cost-sensitive blends

Recommendation: If you are a specialty roaster in Europe, US, Japan, or Australia, start with Gayo Arabica Grade 1 (washed or natural). If you are a commercial roaster or instant coffee manufacturer buying in volume, Lampung Robusta Grade 1 offers the best price-to-quality ratio in Indonesia.

3. Coffee Grades Explained (SNI Indonesia Standard)

Indonesia uses the SNI (Standar Nasional Indonesia) grading system based on defect count per 300g sample.

GradeMax Defects per 300gExport UseNotes
Grade 1≤ 11Specialty + premium commercial exportBest quality, lowest defect — request Grade 1 for all specialty purchases
Grade 212–25Commercial exportAcceptable for commercial blends; verify moisture carefully
Grade 326–44Local/domestic mainlyNot recommended for import unless for industrial instant
Grade 4a / 4b45+Domestic / industrialAvoid for specialty or premium commercial use

For Robusta: Lampung Robusta uses ELB (Extra Large Bean) and WIB (Washed Indonesian Beans) classifications in addition to SNI grade. ELB Grade 1 = screen 18+. Always specify Grade 1 and ask for the defect count certificate.

4. FOB Ports by Origin

Key point: FOB port determines your freight cost. Belawan (Medan) is cheaper for Europe than Makassar. Always ask your supplier which port they are loading from — don't assume it's always Tanjung Priok.
PortLocationMain Origins ShippedApprox. Transit to Europe
BelawanMedan, North SumatraGayo, Mandheling, Lintong, Kerinci25–35 days
Tanjung PriokJakarta, JavaJava, Flores, Bali (via consolidation), mixed lots28–38 days
MakassarSouth SulawesiToraja, Flores (Eastern)32–42 days
FOB PanjangBandar Lampung, South SumatraLampung Robusta28–38 days
Surabaya (Tanjung Perak)East JavaJava Robusta, Temanggung, Eastern Java Arabica30–40 days

For multi-origin LCL (Less than Container Load) consolidations, Tanjung Priok (Jakarta) is the most common consolidation hub. However, consolidation adds 1–2 weeks and extra handling cost.

5. Export Documents Required for Indonesian Green Coffee

Indonesia's green coffee export document set is standard across all origins. All documents are issued by Indonesian government agencies, not self-certified by the exporter.

DocumentIssued ByPurposeRequired By
Phytosanitary CertificateKementan (Ministry of Agriculture)Pest and disease clearanceAll countries
Certificate of Origin (ICO)Kemendag (Ministry of Trade)Coffee origin for ICO tracking; duty reduction in ICO member countriesEU, USA, Japan, most markets
Health CertificateMinistry of Health / DinkesFood safety clearanceEU, USA, Australia

Organic CertificateThird-party certifier (e.g. USDA/NOP, EU/ECOCERT)Organic import eligibilityBuyers requiring organic
Fumigation CertificateLicensed fumigation companyPest treatment proofAustralia, New Zealand, some markets

Buyer tip: Ask for a sample document set from your prospective supplier — a redacted copy of a past shipment's document package. Any legitimate Indonesian exporter can provide this. If they cannot or refuse, it is a red flag.

6. MOQ and Order Sizing Reality

Order TypeTypical MOQBest ForPricing
Cupping sample250g – 1 kgQuality evaluation before commitmentCost price + shipping; credited on commercial order
Trial order100–500 kgFirst order, quality verification, customer testing+5–15% above commercial rate
Commercial LCL500 kg – 5 MTRegular roasters, small importersStandard commercial price
FCL (20-ft container)18,000–19,000 kg (single origin) or ~15,000 kg (multi-origin)Large roasters, distributors, tradersBest FOB price; freight efficiency
FCL (40-ft container)26,000–27,000 kgHigh-volume commercial buyersBest unit economics

Important: Many Indonesian exporters advertise "MOQ 50 kg" but in practice cannot reliably fill small LCL orders without significant delays. Realistically, 500 kg is the practical minimum for a smooth commercial transaction including custom lot selection, cupping, and full documentation.

7. The Sample Request Process

The standard sample process for sourcing Indonesian green coffee from a serious exporter:

  1. Initial contact: Send WhatsApp or email with your origin preference, processing preference, quantity target, and destination country.
  2. Supplier response (within 24–48h): Supplier shares current lot availability with preliminary cupping notes, SCA score estimate, and FOB price range.
  3. Sample confirmation: You confirm which lot(s) to sample. Supplier prepares 250g–1 kg cupping samples per lot.
  4. Sample shipping: Samples shipped via FedEx/DHL. Cost is usually USD 40–120 depending on destination. Legitimate suppliers either share cost or credit the full sample cost against your commercial order.
  5. Your cupping evaluation: You cup the samples and provide feedback. If satisfied, proceed to commercial order.
  6. Commercial order confirmation: Sign a proforma invoice. Pay 30% deposit. Supplier confirms lot reservation and export timeline.
  7. Pre-shipment confirmation: Supplier shares moisture reading, defect count, and packing photos before container sealing.
  8. Balance payment: Pay 70% balance before container sealing (or before BL release, depending on terms).
  9. Shipping & documents: Container departs. Supplier provides full document set within 5–7 business days of BL date.

The entire cycle from first contact to shipment departure typically takes 3–6 weeks for an established lot, or 6–12 weeks for a custom or reserved harvest lot.

8. Supplier Verification Checklist

Use this checklist before placing any commercial order

9. Red Flags to Avoid

🚩 "No MOQ — we can ship from 1 kg"

Real green coffee exporters have logistics minimums. "No MOQ" usually means a retail reseller or broker without actual export infrastructure.

🚩 Refuses to provide NIB / API-U number

Any registered PT in Indonesia can provide their NIB. Refusal suggests the company is not legally registered as an exporter.

🚩 Price far below market (e.g. Gayo Arabica Grade 1 at USD 4/kg)

Gayo Arabica Grade 1 FOB Belawan in June 2026 is USD 7.50–11.00/kg. Prices far below market usually mean wrong grade, wrong year's crop, or fraud.

🚩 Wants 100% payment upfront for first commercial order

Legitimate Indonesian exporters offer 30/70 terms (30% deposit, 70% before shipping). 100% upfront for FCL from a new buyer is unusual and risky.

🚩 Cannot provide pre-shipment moisture or defect data

Any serious exporter checks moisture and defects before shipping. If they cannot provide this data, ask why.

🚩 Different company names on website, WhatsApp, invoice

Entity consistency is a basic trust signal. Mismatches suggest either multiple unrelated middlemen or fraudulent representation.

🚩 No physical address or address that doesn't match origin

A "Gayo Arabica supplier" with an address in Jakarta (not Medan or Aceh) is likely a broker without sourcing infrastructure.

10. Payment Terms for New Buyers

TermStructureBest For
T/T 30/7030% deposit on proforma, 70% balance before container sealingMost new buyer commercial orders (500 kg – 5 MT)
T/T 100% upfrontFull payment before production/packingSmall orders (< 500 kg), custom processing lots
LC at sightLetter of Credit issued by buyer's bank, released at BL presentationFCL orders (18+ MT), maximum buyer protection
Open terms (net-30/60)Payment after BL receipt or arrivalEstablished buyers with 3+ successful orders; negotiated individually

Practical advice: For your first order with any Indonesian supplier, use T/T 30/70. The 30% deposit is normal and expected — it covers the cost of reserving and preparing your lot. For FCL orders, consider requesting LC terms as maximum protection. Never wire 100% before seeing at minimum a pre-shipment moisture report and packing photos.
